New Jersey Republicans continue to prefer former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney as their standard-bearer in the battle against President Barack Obama, according to this morning's Rutgers-Eagleton Poll.

But Romney has yet to solidify his support here.

While about a third (36 percent) of GOP voters and “leaners” favor Romney, former U.S. senator, Pennsylvanian Rick Santorum has risen to second at 19 percent. The two are followed by former U.S. House Speaker Newt Gingrich and Texas Representative Ron Paul, each of whom claims support from 11 percent of Republicans. Another 14 percent say they would prefer “someone else” not in the field or none of the choices, and 8 percent are unsure.

“Romney has yet to break 40 percent here, reflecting the continued uncertainty about him among Republicans,” said poll Director David Redlawsk, a professor of political science at Rutgers University. “As in other states, we have seen Santorum rise from nearly nothing to become a contender. But for the moment Romney remains well out front in the GOP field.”

Cape May County Democratic Organization is looking for help.  The local party took is advertising in local newspapers this week seeking candidates, campaign workers, and donors they say will help build a two party system in Cape May County.

“People tell me that they want a choice, that they want a two party system in Cape May County,” said Jim Pickering, the Cape May County party chairman. “To do that, we need candidates, we need campaign workers, and we need donors.  We paid for an ad to reach out to new people. I hope we get a lot of calls.”

Republicans dominate local politics, with a lock on elected positions at the county level and in many local towns. Republicans also took a majority on the governing bodies in Middle Township and Dennis Township last year.

Also last year, Democrats kept control of the local legislative team, reelecting Sen. Jeff Van Drew and his running mates, Assemblymen Matt Milam and Nelson Albano, but had no candidates on the ballot for county sheriff or two seats on the freeholder board.

This year, with the presidential race at the top of the ticket, a single seat on the county Freeholder Board is up for election at the county level, as is the county Surrogate seat.

There are opportunities in local communities and at the county level, states the Democratic organization.

“If you want to help, we will find the perfect place for you,” Pickering said.

The ad tells those interested to call Pickering at 624-2900.
